What is the Right Gas Type for my Truck?

Choosing the Right Fuel for Peak Performance & Heavy Towing

For three generations, we’ve focused on honesty, integrity, and treating customers as honored guests and family. It’s why Fowler Chevrolet has been the most trusted Chevrolet dealership for 53 years for Chevrolet owners, families, and drivers throughout Broomfield, Denver, Boulder, Westminster, and Thornton. From supporting local nonprofits, ensuring every customer gets to drive away in the Chevrolet they’ve always wanted, to ensuring all customers get the best service and maintenance, we’re always here for our customers.

One of the more common questions we receive at Fowler Chevrolet concerns what type of gas should be used for a given Chevrolet Truck. Whether it’s the off-road-capable and always-exciting Chevrolet Colorado, the full-size light-duty Chevrolet Silverado 1500, or the iconic Silverado 2500 HD or Silverado 3500 HD, the type of gas used goes a long way toward ensuring peak performance and successful heavy hauling and towing.

So, what is the right type of gas for your truck?

Older Chevrolet Trucks

First, always make sure you check your owner’s manual for the type of gas your truck needs. That owner’s manual includes everything you need to properly maintain your truck. Now, as for an older Chevrolet that might be 7 to 10 years old, these trucks were largely designed to run on 87-octane regular unleaded. If your owner’s manual does call for 87 octane, then you don’t need to pay for premium.

One of the most common mistakes is assuming that a higher octane means the gasoline itself is better quality. That simply isn’t the case. The higher octane indicates how much pressure the gasoline can handle before premature ignition. That ignition is precisely controlled. When it isn’t, a process called engine knock can occur – which can damage certain engine components.

When you’re driving your Chevrolet truck, air and fuel enter each cylinder in your truck’s engine. The pistons then compress that mixture before the spark plug is ignited. If there is too much heat and pressure, then the combustion can become uncontrolled through the engine’s cylinders. This is the essence of engine knock, and it can damage engine parts if it persists.

The octane rating is a measurement of how the gas can resist premature and uncontrolled combustion. Therefore, the higher the octane rating, the more resistant the gas is to engine knock.

  • ➔Silverado 1500 2.7L TurboMax: 87-octane regular unleaded.
  • ➔Silverado 1500 5.3L V8: 87-octane regular unleaded.
  • ➔Silverado 1500 6.2L V8: Premium 91-octane or higher recommended for best performance.

Why is the type of gas so important?

It would be great if everyone could just fill up their trucks with the cheapest gas available. Unfortunately, that’s not a good approach. Ultimately, Chevrolet truck engines were engineered, designed, and manufactured around specific octane ratings. That means the engine was designed to perform its best when the right gas octane is used.

When you use the manufacturer’s suggested octane rating (owner’s manual), you ensure you’re using the gas that allows your engine to perform its best. It’s ultimately about engine performance and efficiency. If you use a lower octane rating, engine knock can occur, which can damage engine parts and reduce your engine’s performance.

Given how many Chevrolet truck owners rely on their trucks for work and play, being able to get the most out of their engine is critical. It’s all about heavy-hauling and heavy-towing, and for Chevrolet owners to get the best out of their truck, using the right octane is critical.

Finally, one of the more common mistakes is assuming that using a higher octane than what’s called for will somehow improve fuel economy or engine performance. It doesn’t. While you can use a higher octane than what’s called for, it’s not needed and is often a waste of money.
